Driving directions: Drive east on Hwy 3 from the community of Pincher Creek (10 minutes), or drive west on Hwy 3 from the community of Fort Macleod (30 minutes). Turn north onto Range Road 291 (There is a sign that says "Summerview"); it is a tar sealed country road, (there is a feedlot on the NE corner). Follow RR 291 4.5 km or 2.7 miles (down the hill, through the cottonwood forest and across The Oldman River along a one lane bridge (note fly fishing location), note the bridge has a 4 meter maximum height allowance, no one has had troubles with this to date. The road goes up the hill on the other side and veers north again at the top. At the top of the hill, stay on the tar seal (RR 291) and go north one more mile approx. 2.5 km. At the stop sign turn right or east onto gravel Secondary Road 785. Go exactly 2 miles (approx. 5km) east (through a yield sign) to Range Road 28-5. (Secondary Road 785 heads north at the yield sign - let it go!) Turn north onto Range Road 28-5 and follow this road 2.5 miles (approx. 6 km) till the end. Just before the farm you will see a large wind break and then you will go down a short but steep hill. Once down the hill you will see the herd of mostly black horses, the green roof of the house/shop and sheds. Larger RV's have parked straight ahead through the gate. It is recommened that only very experienced RV drivers take big units into the yard. Turn into the first gate and park on the west driveway loop, just down wind of the large tree in the yard (there is a fairly level spot there, please stay on the gravel driveway). Someone will meet you if you if you arrive at the scheduled time.

Items to Purchase
What to do at the farm: Since 2008, Windy Coulee has hosted guests from all over the world, who volunteer with chores that care for the animals living on the farm. This is via the WWOOF Canada Program (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms). As of May 2022, the farm is open to Harvest Host Campers. Guests will enjoy a quiet and remote camping experience and a relaxed farm visit. You can contribute towards the farms objective of horse and land stewardship by donating towards the following activities led by Heidi.
Horse Hugs: The horses love people, and there is a herd who wants to visit with you. The Canadian Horse Herd is a great representation of Canada’s National Horse, which is also a rare domestic breed. The horses are very beautiful, sociable and enjoy cuddles, grooming and photo shoots. In fact, one of our horses has worked on the TV Show, Heartland and has posed for High School Graduation photos and Weddings! I love taking photos of our guests with the horses, and can provide digital images via email. Donations accepted. Walking Tour: If you are a birder or interested in the landscape and ecosystem protected on the farm, book a walking tour of the native prairie landscape. Heidi worked for Alberta Provincial Parks as a Park Naturalist for 30 years, and loves sharing her experience managing the farm and conserving mixed grass prairie and the riparian ecosystem along Beaver Creek. Beaver, coyotes, long tailed weasel, mule and white tailed deer, rare prairie small grassland birds, eagles, hawks and falcons frequent the area. On occasion a bear and elk travel through the valley, and there is a reclusive resident cougar. Donations accepted.
Coffee wth the Chickens: Enjoy your cell service on a comfortable park bench, protected from the wind, in front of the chicken house. When someone is there to supervise, the chickens get out to free range. Enjoy a close up visit with Frankie our instagram rooster, or Brandon, our retired cochin rooster. Having your coffee while the chickens scratch, cluck and do their chicken thing, is actually quite an experience; one I do daily with or without guests. You may need to restock on free range eggs. Donations accepted.
