Texas as a whole is an excellent place for RV camping. Due to its sheer size, we’ve had to break down the camping opportunities based on geography. So far, we’ve covered RV camping in East, Central, and Gulf Coast Texas. Our next stop brings us to West Texas. West Texas has a few big stops like El Paso and Big Bend National Park, but there are tons of small towns in between that also offer ample RV camping opportunities.
Some of the stops on our list are free public land boondocking, while some are Harvest Hosts locations, and others encompass some of the best RV parks that West Texas has to offer. El Paso, Texas
El Paso is the largest town in Western Texas. This town is rich with history, beginning as a town independent of Texas, then becoming a frontier town after the railroads were built, and eventually settling as the vibrant city that it is today. There are several nearby areas to park your RV while you hit the town to explore.
Franklin Mountains State Park
This state park is located fifteen minutes from El Paso and is a must-stop for outdoor adventurers. There are ample hiking, biking, and rock climbing opportunities, as well as five reservable RV sites without hookups.
Gaslight Square Mobile Home Estates & RV Community
Located thirty minutes from downtown El Paso, this fenced-in community offers daily, weekly, and monthly rates for full hookups RV spaces. They also offer on-site laundry, restrooms with showers, and close proximity to restaurants and stores.
Hueco Tanks State Park
Located about forty-five minutes from El Paso, Hueco Tanks is an area rich with history. To preserve the delicate nature of the park, only seventy visitors are allowed entry each day for self-guided visits, and ranger-led guided tours require reservations. Their campground offers water only or partial hookups with restrooms and a dump station on-site.
Painted Dunes Desert Golf Course
To enjoy this location, Harvest Hosts members will need to upgrade their membership to include the golf plan. Appropriately named, this stunning course offers twenty-seven holes of championship-style golf. After playing a round of golf, visitors can head to The Dunes Bar & Grill for a bite to eat. This Harvest Hosts location offers three reservable, pet-friendly sites for RVs of any size.
Big Bend National Park
Big Bend National Park is a geological marvel scattered with sea fossils, dinosaur bones, and volcanic buttes. This park is known as “Texas’ gift to the nation” and is one of the most treasured national parks among travelers.
Boondocking
Big Bend offers camping permits for their primitive roadside camping locations that can accommodate RVs. These are in high-demand, so you will want to plan accordingly. RVers lucky enough to score one of these sites are able to enjoy beautiful views in their maximum two weeks of usage. Please note that these spaces can only accommodate RVs under thirty feet in length.
Campgrounds within the Park
There are four total campgrounds located within the park limits. Rio Grande RV Village is the only one that offers full hookups. The other three offer potable water on-site, restrooms, and dump stations.

Marfa, Texas
Marfa is an artsy community and home to the Marfa Mystery Lights. Travelers come from all over to try to catch a glimpse of these mysterious lights that sometimes appear in the night sky.
Marfa Yacht Club
If you’re traveling to Marfa with an Airstream, you’re in luck! This RV park caters specifically to Airstream RVs. Airstreams up to thirty-two feet in length can enjoy full hookups and access to a heated pool.
Tumble In RV Park
This full hookup RV park offers on-site restrooms, a full kitchen, laundry, and picnic tables. “Tumble in” to park your RV here while you explore the town of Marfa.
Van Horn, Texas
For many, the town of Van Horn is a favorite stop on the way to Guadalupe Mountains National Park, but this town is not to be missed for any West Texas traveler. There are several RV parks to choose from, as well as many restaurants offering delicious fare. The town itself is also rich in history.

Van Horn RV Park
Visitors can enjoy full hookups at this RV park. Their amenities include a general store, a café, an on-site laundry room, a horse corral, dog parks, a swimming pool, and a fishing pond.
Guadalupe Mountains National Park
While Big Bend National Park typically gets most of the attention, Guadalupe Mountains National Park is also not to be missed. Visitors can find mountains, canyons, dunes, and stunning skies and scenery here. There are two campgrounds within the park. Neither have hookups, but visitors can enjoy beautiful surrounding scenery.
Fort Davis, Texas
The town of Fort Davis is home to a national historic site, a state park, and a mountain range. Travelers looking to beat the crowds of the national parks can find some peace in Fort Davis, known as the highest town in Texas due to its elevation.
Davis Mountains RV Park
This park offers full hookups. RVers can rest easy knowing they’re just a short walk to much of what Fort Davis has to offer.
Davis Mountains State Park
Here, visitors can enjoy exploration high up in the mountains of Davis Mountains State Park. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking, backpacking, stargazing, horseback riding (bring your own horse), camping, and mountain biking. Their RV park offers full or partial hookups and picnic tables.
Alpine, Texas
