RV Skiing Trip Ideas

Despite warmer temperatures around the United States, March is actually commonly considered the peak time for skiing at higher elevations. At the time this article is written, the peaks of the Rocky Mountains are still snow-capped and receiving fresh snowfall throughout the week. Warmer weather surrounding ski towns means that roads are mostly unobstructed, and the temperatures are not nearly as freezing cold as they are in the earlier winter months. This can be the perfect month to take your RV into the mountains for your next skiing trip, and we're prepared to help you plan the perfect itinerary. Recommended RV ski trip locations include:

California

Any Californian will tell you that one of the many perks of living in California is the ability to hit both the ski slopes and the beach in the very same day. Because of this, California is home to several excellent skiing areas that are still great to visit in the month of March.

Where to Go

In California, Mammoth Lakes, Lake Tahoe, and Kirkwood are some of the top-rated ski trip destinations. Most of California also happens to be RV-friendly, so there is no need to worry about finding water to fill up along your route or places to camp overnight.

What to Do

When you aren’t partaking in winter activities, be sure to visit some of the surrounding lakes adjacent to the ski resorts. These are not only scenic, but usually offer some opportunities for enjoying water sports as well. In addition to the lakes, visiting northern coastal California is a special trip in and of itself.

As stated earlier, California is very RV-friendly, so finding campgrounds, resorts, or quick overnight stays should be fairly easy for RVers. There are tons of options spread out throughout the giant state, from KOAs to state and national parks to private campgrounds.

Bishop Country Club - Bishop, CA

The Bishop Country Club is scenic, affordable, and offers just about every amenity that a golfer could need. They offer golf lessons, a full on-site restaurant, a fully-stocked Pro Shop, and a driving range. This Harvest Hosts location also offers two pet-friendly spaces for RVs of any size.

Christ the King Lutheran Church - Tahoe City, CA

Churches are one of Harvest Hosts newest overnight stays offered. Found throughout the country and with ample parking spaces, churches can be a wonderful overnight stop. Please be sure to read all instructions carefully to be respectful of these Hosts. At the time this article was written, Christ the King Lutheran Church is the only Harvest Hosts location in close proximity to Lake Tahoe. This Harvest Hosts location offers three pet-friendly spaces for RVs up to thirty feet in length.

Gold Hill Hotel - Gold Hill, NV

Just over the border of Lake Tahoe, there are also ample Harvest Hosts available in the state of Nevada. One of these Hosts is the Gold Hill Hotel, the oldest hotel in Nevada. Visitors can enjoy a delicious dinner or enjoy happy hour in their saloon, while also being permitted to stay the night nearby this amazing hotel. This Harvest Hosts location has two pet-friendly spaces available for RVs up to thirty-five feet in length.

Sunridge Golf and Recreations - Carson City, NV

First opened in 1998, this unique golf course is built directly into the Sierra Nevada slopes. In addition to golf, they also offer archery, ax throwing, bounce houses, and an on-site bar and grill. This Harvest Hosts location has three pet-friendly spaces available for RVs up to thirty feet in length.

Brown's English Toffee & Celtic Candies - Fiddletown, CA

Brown’s has been crafting incredible handmade candies since 1982 and still uses the same recipes for authenticity today. Here, they produce a variety of toffees, jams, caramels, fudges, and more. This Harvest Hosts location offers one pet-friendly site for RVs under thirty-five feet in length, so be sure to book your stay as far in advance as you can.

Colorado

It’s no secret that Colorado is king for skiing (although we may be a little biased since we’re based in Colorado). The Rocky Mountains are home to some of the highest peaks in the contiguous United States and have continued snow well into the late spring and early summer months.

Where to Go

In Colorado, some of the best places to ski are Arapahoe Basin, Wolf Creek, Winter Park, Beaver Creek, Copper Mountain, and Loveland Pass. All of these areas rank as some of the best places to ski, while also being RV-friendly and accessible, with plenty to do nearby as well.

What to Do

When you aren’t hitting the slopes, be sure to visit some local restaurants outside of the ski resorts. Many ski resort towns rely on tourism to stay open and were badly affected by the pandemic. Consider checking out the Ice Castles in Dillon, the Keystone Bike Path, the Rocky Mountain Balloon Adventures in Pagosa Springs, or the Georgetown Loop Railroad.

Campgrounds

All of the towns above have RV campgrounds or resorts to stay in. Additionally, there are a few places to overnight camp for free, such as Camping World or Walmart. Be sure to call ahead to either reserve your stay or confirm that you can park in any of these locations overnight.

Harvest Hosts Locations

There aren’t too many Harvest Hosts locations in the ski areas of Colorado. However, just under thirty minutes south of Copper Mountain are two beautiful Harvest Hosts locations.

Mt. Massive Golf Course - Leadville, CO

Located at over 10,000 feet above sea level, this course is the highest one in the United States. Anyone from Colorado knows how difficult it can be to grow grass, so this course has had a lot of help with irrigation in order to provide the lush greens visitors see today. They offer three beautiful, pet-friendly sites for RVs of any size.

Tenderfoot Farm - Twin Lakes, CO

Tenderfoot Farm is a family-owned operation, operated on farmland that has been owned by the family for over six generations. They offer fresh chicken and duck eggs, pork, teas, and a selection of amazing items in their gift shop. They’re also home to Balltown Mini Motors, which is an awesome mechanic shop. Talk about an all-in-one location! This Harvest Hosts location offers three pet-friendly spaces for RVs under twenty-five feet in length.

If you are not seeing quite enough local camping options, consider obtaining a Boondockers Welcome membership in addition to your Harvest Hosts membership. There are many locations throughout Colorado, including some in Breckenridge and Leadville.

In general, planning a skiing trip can be a lot of fun, but it can also become expensive pretty quickly.
