I’m just off the lake. I’m building new cabin and moving part of old and tearing down the rest this spring. So some construction being done. Made a nice spot for a trailer and possibly more. Several tent pads and possibly some amenities available. I plan to run at least 30 amp service to the main pad I had made for the trailer. I haven’t tested, but I have a sewage pipe run out to that spot. As will run a water line. Suggested Local Attractions:Fred’s meats... mmm, bacon! Sorry can’t list it all. Haha. A favorite for us is the Ely blueberry festival (100 miles but worth it.) Iron Mine lookouts and tours. Many fishing lakes. 70 miles to Duluth... waterfront, north shore, train museum, shops... Great bike trails and on a good atv trail. Note: atv’s are legal to ride on county roads. Check registration requirements at MN DNR.

House Rules

Just be respectful with noise, pets, trash, etc. I’ll do my best to accommodate. But I might be working, at a fire call or meeting. So be patient. Pick up dog poop, cigarette butts, general trash. If I’m able I’ll help get rid of your bagged trash. I’ll let you know where and what you can burn in the fire pit. Let me know your needs ahead of time and I’ll do what I can to accommodate you. Garage is off limited unless invited. We need to see if our dogs are compatible. Generators should be off after 10 PM I guess it depends on when and who else is here. But we need to discuss your needs vs what is going on here. My kids come in the summer some. My girls are running the grandmas marathon... And at the same time I’ll respect your space. I’ll have a list of any additional rules...

Location

Access Road Conditions: You’ll have to come down off blacktop on a well maintained gravel road. It can be soft in the spring when the ice is coming off. Small hill on driveway with level spots to park. Large rigs come down our road, but caution turning in as the shoulders drop as coming off blacktop. Just turn wide. Some hanging trees but all avoidable. Tow Vehicle Parking Details: I have a big driveway area

North Country Ben Details: My main employment was building fireplaces and chimneys until my body abruptly said no more. I live in northern Minnesota at the site my dad and grandfather built a hunting shack/ cabin. I gained employment with the township about 14 years ago. Shortly after I joined the volunteer fire department here. The last ten years I revisited an old passion of canoeing into wilderness settings exploring, fishing and enjoying all that comes with that. My health has taken a hit, so I’m enjoying helping others enjoy the outdoors where and when I can. I live two miles from our little town of Goodland, MN. Half way between Hibbing and Grand Rapids... about 25 miles to each from my place. I while building my house had a spot leveled out for a camper. I’m currently deciding how much I want to develop this spot. But if I find people wanting to come and use it as a spot to spend a couple nights I would welcome that and actually enjoy seeing it used. I have a good sized campfire ring and places I’ve made for an annual event here with canoeing buffs to pitch tents. Not on the lake, but a very short walk maybe 50 yards from my property to the public beach and lake. I know the guy in charge of taking care of it... me. Haha. Home Town: Grew up in Bloomington MN, worked my way north stopping for many years in Cloquet MN where I had a business building fireplaces and chimneys and raised four kids. Now I’ve made my way to our old cabin where my mom was born across the lake and I have other family history. Here in Goodland MN home of Fred’s meats known internationally where from bacon to steaks... we eat well. Our fire hall puts on a great steak feed every January. But beginning this next year (2021) I hope to be boondocking myself. I’m next to the town beach/ boat landing on a small lake we’ve always called lake on 5... but it’s called by DNR as New Lake. Fishing is pan fish like sunnies and crappies and also bass and some Northern’s. Boat landing is for smaller fishing and rec boats. And can be a problem only if you have a bigger boat then your vehicle can handle on a softer gravel roadway. Favorite Boondocking Locations: Not sure, but I have grandkids in Washington state. So west and southwest. I also do some hauling of canoes and kayaks on the side. So traveling is not anything new. I hope to visit the Yuma to Phoenix areas when it’s like this morning here... -23 degrees. Oops, I didn’t see below of boondocking places I’d want to share... I’ll have to think on that and hopefully can get back to you. But my place here is a good spot in the summer months and I know of good camping areas northwest in the superior national forest I plan to check out this summer. Skills or Expertise to Share: Some mechanical and maybe camping, hunting and such. My love of masonry work is hampered by my physical being. I’m a 14 yr firefighter first responder.

Ben and his dog were very accommodating. He has a spot overlooking the lake (2 minute walk down) where there are a couple pavilions and sandy beaches. Felt like we had the whole lake to ourselves! Ben is very laid back, friendly, and knowledgeable about the area. I did have to back up into the space but it was plenty large enough for our 23’ motor home. We would stay here again.

This was a great place to stop overnight. The lake view was wonderful, the space was peaceful and quiet and the host, Ben went above and beyond making sure I was settled and had everything I needed. this would be a great pmace for multiple days. I would stay here again. Thank you so much, Ben, and hugs to Kyra 🤗.

Ben was awesome and told us right where to park and assisted in doing so. Just a walk away from the lake and recommended a local market for some good bacon. He wasn't wrong! Good stuff. Thanks for the stay!

Ben was a great host. We enjoyed exchanging stories in his back yard that overlooks the lake. We definitely recommend staying here and will stop back if we are in the area.

Boy oh boy... what a beautiful view I had from my RV! I spent seveveral days here and you couldn't get a better, more picturesque spot anywhere else. Green grass, pretty trees and a lovely lake were all I could gaze upon every time I stepped out the door or looked out of my window. Having 50amp electric, full water hook-up and even a drain for grey water was icing on the cake! I couldn't ask for a more charming, generous host. He was so helpful in getting my rig set-up as well as hooking/un-hooking my tow vehicle. He makes his own maple syrup, of which he gave me a generous sample- Yum! He also offered the use of a nice outdoor table and fire pit. He was even so kind as to take my garbage for me before I left, and we all know how hard that can be to find a place for. All in all, I highly recommend this site and this wonderful host.
