About
San Juan Ranch is a certified organic, grass-fed and grass finished cattle ranch located in the San Luis Valley near Saguache, Colorado operated by George Whitten and Julie Sullivan. We are Audubon Society Certified, a Holistic Management International Outstanding Demonstration Site, and a mentor site for the Quivira Coalition New Agrarian Program. We are committed to restorative practices that result in soil health, functioning grassland ecosystems, and viable small scale ranching.
Check out our website at bluerangeranch.com for more information!
Here are a few things to be aware of before you book your stay:
1. Our ranch is accessed via county dirt roads. These roads are graded and maintained by the county, are used by all sorts of vehicles from cars to large semi trucks, and should be accessible to any size/type of rig.
2. Cattle may be present at the ranch during your stay, depending on the season (they are generally up in the mountains during the summer). Our cattle are quite calm and good-tempered, but we ask that guests do not enter paddocks without permission and/or accompaniment by ranch staff.
3. Given that cattle may be around, along with ranch dogs and heavy equipment, guests' dogs must be on a leash at all times when on site. Our dogs are working dogs, and tend to be somewhat territorial around the ranch house, so guests' dogs must stay at the camping site. Please let us know if you are bringing a dog with you.
4. Be aware that the electric fence we use to contain the cattle is kept on and hot at all times, so best to avoid these fences, and be especially aware of them if guests have children.
5. This is a rural site, so you will probably see and hear wildlife during your stay. Be aware that we have several active coyote dens on the property. They are nothing to be concerned about, but you'll likely hear them yipping at night. It also can be buggy here, depending on the season. We ask that guests are respectful of the wild residents of the ranch. A core element of our approach to land management is creating and preserving habitat that fosters not just healthy cattle, but a healthy ecosystem, and we'd like our guests to help us in that pursuit!
We work closely with the Audubon Society, and are a certified Bird-Friendly ranch through that organization's Conservation Ranching program. We'd be happy to share with interested guests the list of bird species you can see here on the ranch!
6. We require 24 hours notice of a requested stay. Also, we require that you request a stay through the Harvest Hosts platform. We are a working ranch with a lot going on aside from hosting guests, so for us to prepare for and accommodate your stay, these requirements are non-negotiable.
