What to do at the farm: Since 2008, Windy Coulee has hosted guests from all over the world, who volunteer with chores that care for the animals living on the farm. This is via the WWOOF Canada Program (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms). As of May 2022, the farm is open to Harvest Host Campers. Guests will enjoy a quiet and remote camping experience and a relaxed farm visit. You can contribute towards the farms objective of horse and land stewardship by donating towards the following activities led by Heidi.
Horse Hugs: The horses love people, and there is a herd who wants to visit with you. The Canadian Horse Herd is a great representation of Canada’s National Horse, which is also a rare domestic breed. The horses are very beautiful, sociable and enjoy cuddles, grooming and photo shoots. In fact, one of our horses has worked on the TV Show, Heartland and has posed for High School Graduation photos and Weddings! I love taking photos of our guests with the horses, and can provide digital images via email. Donations accepted. Walking Tour: If you are a birder or interested in the landscape and ecosystem protected on the farm, book a walking tour of the native prairie landscape. Heidi worked for Alberta Provincial Parks as a Park Naturalist for 30 years, and loves sharing her experience managing the farm and conserving mixed grass prairie and the riparian ecosystem along Beaver Creek. Beaver, coyotes, long tailed weasel, mule and white tailed deer, rare prairie small grassland birds, eagles, hawks and falcons frequent the area. On occasion a bear and elk travel through the valley, and there is a reclusive resident cougar. Donations accepted.
Coffee wth the Chickens: Enjoy your cell service on a comfortable park bench, protected from the wind, in front of the chicken house. When someone is there to supervise, the chickens get out to free range. Enjoy a close up visit with Frankie our instagram rooster, or Brandon, our retired cochin rooster. Having your coffee while the chickens scratch, cluck and do their chicken thing, is actually quite an experience; one I do daily with or without guests. You may need to restock on free range eggs. Donations accepted.
