About
We are an off-grid experiment in self-sustained living and stewardship of the blessings of our land. At our 35-acre farmstead just over the Florida line south of Atmore, Alabama, we constantly strive to use permaculture principles to enjoy the bounty of the land while preserving its ability to feed future generations. I am Wendy, and my husband’s name is Doug. My hobby farm was established when we became empty nesters after raising our children at the beach, on Florida's northern Gulf Coast. Solace Farm is a 35-acre piece of paradise just 1 hour north of the sugar white sands of Northwest Florida's Emerald Coast. Our Farm came into our lives after our waterfront home was destroyed by Hurricane Sally, and it began as a home for my first bottle baby goats and a relaxing place to “get away” in our RV. Our Farm is now home to 29 goats; 2 donkeys; numerous chickens, guinea fowl, and quail; 2 emus; 3 peacocks and 4 livestock guardian dogs, in addition to the "house dog" and 3 cats! We converted a pole barn into our primary residence and are living in an off-grid true “barndominium”. We enjoy having fresh raw goat milk and products such as various goat cheeses, soaps, and lotions, and we absolutely love life here. We are blessed beyond measure, and we get immense enjoyment from sharing our blessings with others. Our farm includes pasture land, a beautiful 10-acre pine plantation, wooded trails, and a spring-fed creek. Natural inhabitants include numerous gopher tortoises (a protected species in Florida), fox, coyote, bobcats, and white-tail deer, just to name a few. When you are walking the trails among the oaks, tall pines, southern magnolias, mimosas, elderberry, beautyberry, ferns, elephant ears, and wild grapevines, you will not believe that you are just 1 hour from the beach. And you will likely be accompanied by some of our sweet goats and emus along the way! While you are staying at the Farm, you will be boondocking in what we call “The North Pasture”. You may be joined at any time by goats, donkeys, emus, and sweet-natured livestock guardian dogs, and you may even hear the donkeys and dogs doing their job during the night fending off would-be predators. If you wish, you may take part in some farm chores, including feeding the animals and milking the goats, you may get a chance to bottle feed and/or play with baby goats, and you may be able to get a lesson in cheese-, soap-, or lotion-making.
