About
We live on a small paved road in a very quiet, rural area along the coast of Maine. But we're just a stone's throw, almost literally, from Route 1. Because our driveway is narrow and your set-up spot is small, we can only accommodate compact rigs, such as a camper van, or a VERY small tow-behind, or a pickup with a slide-in camper -- 25-foot maximum total length. There is a public sandy beach a five-minute stroll away, and a park with wooded walking paths. You will park your rig just at the top of our paved driveway, but the land immediately beside you belongs to our good neighbor so we ask that you be discreet in your activities there -- it's fine for visiting our small vegetable garden, sitting in your comfy chairs, cooking on your outside stove. You are welcome to explore the rest of our property, on the other side of the house, and there are several nice walks nearby. We can provide water from our garden hose and electricity; we prefer that you not run a generator after dusk, if at all. We value our peace and quiet, though we will enjoy meeting you and answering any questions you may have. Please note: A railroad track runs very close to the house and to your set-up space. The trains are short, slow and infrequent, usually only once or twice a week. We kind of like them, but they do make a racket! And they may be scary for pets and small children. Suggested Local Attractions: Bar Harbor and the Acadia National Park visitors' center are about an hour and 15 minutes northeast of us. Sandy Point Beach and Park, a five-minute stroll from our place. Dogs on leash only, and please, please pick up after them no matter what. Trash cans in the parking area and in our barn. Fort Knox State Historic Site, 10 minute drive north on Route 1, on your way to Acadia — cooler than it sounds and especially great for kids. The Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory, near the fort, 10 minutes north — really spectacular. Bucksport, 15 minutes north on Route 1, has a good grocery store, a movie theater, restaurants, a pharmacy and a hardware, and is a pretty, historic village with a great riverfront walkway. Searsport, 10 minutes south on Route 1, has a good marine museum, a few restaurants (falafel!), an okay grocery store, some small shops and galleries, and a really nice public park and beach. Belfast, 20 minutes south, is a more happenin’ place for music, restaurants, festivals, fun shopping, and a great riverfront walk.

Mid-coast Mainers Details: Photo credit: Jeff Kirlin, The Thing of the Moment. We live in an old house on a quiet road, just across from the Penobscot River as it widens into the ocean. There is a public pebble beach and park with wooded walking trails in easy walking distance from our home. Meg is a retired healthcare journalist and Douglas is a lettercutter in stone. Home Town: Stockton Springs is a small river town with a history of shipbuilding, fishing and other water-related commerce. We’re about 20 miles from Belfast, which offers a variety of restaurants, fun shopping and frequent music festivals in the summer. Bucksport is about 10 minutes from us, with shopping, a movie theater and other amenities. Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park are about an hour and 15 minutes away.

House Rules
Pets must stay in your rig or on leash only, and please pick up after them rigorously Please ask us if you have special circumstances and need to use a generator. Please stay off the railroad track, except if you want to put pennies on it in case a train comes along. Please do not use our neighbor’s grassy land next to your camper except for quiet sitting, cooking and conversation. Our big yard on the other side of the house is fully available for games, dog-walking or other activities. You may also use the paved area near your camper for grilling, chairs, etc. Please, no open fires without specific permission. We can provide you with a contained fire ring. No smoking. Moderate alcohol only. No partying. No loud phone conversations, TV, music, etc.
Parking & Arrival
We are literally just a minute away from busy US Rt 1, but our little neighborhood feels very secluded. The road is narrow but paved. Our driveway has deep ditches on both sides at the base so you cannot safely make a wide turn in from the street -- particularly challenging for tow-behind rigs. It's roughly paved, uphill, and ends in a large, level, paved dooryard behind the house. You will set up in this area, about 50 feet from the house, with your sliding door opening away from the house, toward a beautiful meadow, for your privacy.
