About
Our museum tells the stories of the Germans from Russia and others who settled in southeast Dakota Territory in the late 1800s. We have a large collection and something for everyone, from old cars and buggies to agricultural equipment to a 1927 biplane and a model railroad set. There are also household items, musical instruments, and things from early area businesses, even a general store, a print shop and the old town jail. We have Native American artifacts, a Hutterite collection, and a Natural World gallery that features a mosasaur skull replica, based on a fossil in our collection. Our archives/library is filled with books, maps, documents, photos, and other resources for those interested in area history or in researching local genealogy. Our museum is located between the Freeman Academy campus (grades K-12) and the beautiful Prairie Arboretum. The (free) arboretum features 40 acres of ponds and native trees and flower gardens, with over a mile of walking trails. There are picnic tables, an amphitheater, and a gazebo on an island! On the southwest edge of the arboretum, you'll find an 18-hole disc golf course (you can buy or rent discs at our mercantile) but if you prefer the real thing, Valley View Golf Course and club house are just a mile down the road. Freeman is a charming small town with a rich history - we hope you'll come to experience it!

Items for Purchase
Most guests spend at least 2 hours touring our museum and visiting our historical buildings, as there is quite literally something for everyone. Our mercantile gift shop features items hand-crafted by "local and locally-grown" artisans, giving you the opportunity to take a bit of southeastern South Dakota home with you. We even sell Berrybrook homemade ice cream for a fun and delicious taste of the country!
Parking & Arrival
Check in with our staff when you arrive for parking information. We have a large gravel parking lot shared with Freeman Academy and the Prairie Arboretum, with the FA soccer field on the other end. We can accommodate more than two RVs so if friends are traveling together, let's chat!
