RV Camping in Alabama

As the weather cools and autumn sets in, the south is the perfect place to take your RV camping. While it is typically very hot and humid in Alabama over the summer, the fall boasts warm temperatures in the 70s, which is perfect for outdoors activities and camping enjoyment. Between the coastal regions, the rural farmlands, the historic cities of Montgomery and Birmingham, and the beautiful lakes and forests, Alabama has quite a few great places to enjoy in your RV. Follow along as we explore eight excellent places for RV camping in Alabama this fall and winter season.

1. Island Retreat RV Park - Gulf Shores, AL

Gulf Shores, Alabama, is a beautiful and quaint little beach town located along the Alabama portion of the southern Gulf Coast. This cute vacation area sports a lovely state park, miles of white, sandy beaches, emerald waters, a pier, trails, a golf course, and a zip line that extends over the dunes. The western area of the city is home to the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, where sea turtles and many species of migratory birds make their winter home. RVers wanting to visit the area should consider a stay at Island Retreat RV Park. This gorgeous resort is located just beside the ocean and features deluxe sites, including full hookups, concrete pads and tons of activities. Additional amenities include a clubhouse, a gorgeous pool, a kid’s playground area, a firepit area, and many games and activities, including cornhole, bingo, horseshoes, poker, euchre, yoga classes, jam sessions, and more. This sounds like the perfect, relaxing getaway to begin our tour of Alabama.

2. Hodges Vineyards & Tasting Room - Camp Hill, AL

After leaving the coast, you can head about four hours north to the Auburn, Alabama area. This area is home to Auburn University and has several cute downtown areas, spacious parks, shops and restaurants, and plenty of typical college town sports. Just twenty minutes from Auburn, Harvest Hosts members can stay the night at the beautiful Hodges Vineyards and Tasting Room. Here, guests can enjoy a tasting room with a variety of muscadine, fruit and grape wines, as well as a pergola/deck area, and a pond. In addition, they have a wildlife sanctuary and hiking opportunities on site, as well as a gift shop and two full hookups sites. The site is rather picturesque, and it is located in a great area, so be sure to check this one out.

3. Montgomery South RV Park & Cabins - Montgomery, AL

About an hour from Hodges Vineyards, you will arrive in Montgomery, Alabama. Montgomery is the capital of Alabama, and it is best known for its rich history, including several locations that were particularly momentous for the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. If you are wanting to stay and explore and learn about this area, Montgomery South RV Park is the perfect place. This campground offers full hookups with both 50-amp and 30-amp electric, as well as propane, laundry, an RV wash, and showers/bathrooms. Be sure to rest up here before moving on to your next location.

4. Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum - Calera, AL

After a visit to Montgomery, you can travel about an hour north to the town of Calera to visit the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum. This awesome Harvest Hosts location is a non-profit museum that operates through donations only. There is a beautiful interior space, full of exhibits and displays dedicated to the area’s unique railroad history, as well as an excellent outdoor area with many unique trains and a showroom. The trains run every Saturday, despite the museum’s interior being currently closed due to COVID-19. However, the outdoor exhibits are still open, and the facility remains open to Harvest Hosts guests. Currently, they offer two spaces for RVs of any size.

5. Birmingham South RV Park - Birmingham, AL

Continuing about thirty minutes north, we’ll hit the city of Birmingham, the most populous city in Alabama. Founded as an industrial railroad hub in the 1870s, this city eventually developed many of its own economical activities. In the 1950s and 1960s, it also became prominent in the civil rights movement and has been well-known for its history at the 16th Street Baptist Church. In 1969, it gained the University of Alabama, which includes a medical school, a school of dentistry, and a law school.Just outside of the city, RVers can stay the night at Birmingham South RV Park. This lovely campground offers full hookups sites and a variety of amenities. These include a pool, a game room, and outdoor activities, such as basketball, horseshoes, and a playground. Be sure to book ahead of time, as this RV park tends to stay busy!

6. Goat Island Brewing - Cullman, AL

About forty-five minutes north of Birmingham, we’ll hit our next stop in the town of Cullman, Alabama. Goat Island Brewing Company first opened in 2015, and they became a Harvest Hosts location about a year ago. Currently, they serve an array of fantastic beers on a small island in the middle of Lake Martin. The setting is pretty, and the beers are great - it doesn’t get much better than that! They offer four pet-friendly spaces for RVs of any size, so be sure not to miss this location.

7. Lake Guntersville State Park - Guntersville, AL

About an hour northeast of Goat Island, we will come upon the beautiful Lake Guntersville State Park consisting of a 6,000-acre state park, full of opportunities for fishing, boating, hiking, biking, and wildlife viewing. This park sits along the scenic Lake Guntersville. In addition to all the attractions found in the surrounding areas, Lake Guntersville State Park hosts events at their lodge throughout the year.

The park’s campground is perfect for RVers looking for a fun vacation. Reservations can be made online, and there are sites with full hookups and other sites with partial hookups. This campground is especially popular in the spring and autumn seasons, so be sure to book and plan ahead.

8. Sullivan Creek Ranch - Vinemont, AL

Our final stop in Alabama is at Sullivan Creek Ranch in the town of Vinemont. This Harvest Hosts location produces cattle, and they are dedicated to enduring relationships and the highest moral, ethical and safety standards in all aspects of their business. Previous guests have greatly enjoyed the ponds and the rolling hills. They offer three spaces for RVs of any size and are most enjoyable in the warmer months of the year.
