Your Guide to RV Roof Maintenance

RV owners know how important it is to keep their rig in great shape. One of the most critical areas that needs constant attention is the roof. This is your first line of defense against the elements. And without proper care, it can lead to numerous problems. In this guide, we’ll take you through everything you need to know to help you keep your RV roof in top condition for years to come.

Inspecting Your RV Roof

Before you start, it’s essential to know what type of roof you have. It could be vinyl, aluminum, rubber, and or many others.

Once you know your roof type, you should inspect it thoroughly. Look for cracks, punctures, and signs of damage. Check the sealant around vents, skylights, and other openings for cracks, gaps, peeling, or signs of wear. Check that all seams and edges are sealed properly without any peeling. If you find issues, address them promptly to prevent further damage.

Cleaning Your RV Roof

Keeping your RV roof clean is crucial. A dirty roof can cause leaks, damage, and slowly destroy the rest of your RV. Before you start, make sure you have the right cleaning products. Don’t use harsh chemicals.

One of the most common roof types is rubber. These are especially sensitive to chemicals and you’ll need a cleaner designed for RV roofs—don’t use household cleaners.

Start by removing debris and loose dirt from the roof—leaf blowers work great! If you are using a broom or brush, use soft-bristles to avoid damaging the rubber. Once you’ve removed loose dirt and debris, use a rubber roof cleaner and a soft brush—similar to what you’d use on your car.

Once you are done, be sure to rinse it thoroughly with a hose to remove any soap residue. Never use a pressure washer! The high pressure can damage and peel several roof types—including rubber.

Sealing Your RV Roof

Sealing your RV roof is an essential part of maintenance. Over time, the sealant around the vents, skylights, sidewalls, and other openings and seams can crack and deteriorate. This wear can lead to leaks causing major damage. Inspect the sealant around these areas, and if you find any cracks, remove the old sealant and replace it.

Use a high-quality RV roof sealant that is designed for use on rubber roofs. Make sure the sealant is compatible with the rubber membrane. Apply it evenly and smoothly, and make sure to fill all gaps and cracks. Be sure to let the sealant fully dry before exposing it to the elements.

Protecting Your RV Roof

Protecting your RV roof is vital to preventing damage and leaks. UV rays from the sun can cause roof materials to deteriorate over time. Consider using an RV roof protectant to protect against UV rays and other environmental factors.

Apply the protectant according to the manufacturer’s instructions, covering the entire roof evenly. Regularly applying an RV roof protectant can extend the life of your RV roof and keep it in good condition.

When storing your RV, opt for covered storage. Covered storage protects your home on wheels from the elements—including the sun. If this isn’t an option for you, there are RV covers that work great for long-term storage. These covers will protect your RV from UV rays, rain, snow, and other elements without creating mold or mildew you’ll need to deal with later.
