About
This 835-acre living history and archaeology museum sits on a picturesque tidewater landscape along the river, featuring recreated structures from Maryland's first capital, a Woodland Indian hamlet, a tall ship reproduction, and a tobacco plantation. Costumed and uniformed interpreters bring centuries of history to life, while ongoing archaeological excavations continue revealing new insights into the region's past. The museum's extensive collections represent millennia of human history and serve as a vital resource for scholars and students worldwide. Guests consistently praise the peaceful atmosphere and excellent accessibility, with an easy walk of less than ten minutes on a wide, ADA-accessible path connecting the RV parking area to the historic town center. The flat parking area is well-lit at night and situated in a secure, quiet setting ideal for restful sleep. Visitors are welcome to explore the grounds after museum hours and can support the museum's programs by paying admission during regular operating hours. Families particularly enjoy the interactive experiences available, including exploring the Woodland Indian Hamlet and visiting the reproduction of the Dove, a 1600s-era sailing ship that takes guests out on the water during warmer months. The costumed historical staff are noted for their enthusiasm and skill in engaging visitors of all ages with authentic stories of colonial and Native American life. A new visitors center and restaurant facility are planned to open in 2026, further enhancing the guest experience.
