About
As sunlight first touches the majestic Sangre de Cristo Mountains, prepare to step back in time and immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Native American culture. Located in the scenic Weston, Colorado, this unique RV camping destination invites you and your family to experience an unforgettable journey through Native American living history, nestled at an elevation of 8,000 feet amid the tranquility of nature. From sunrise to sunset, engage in a range of hands-on activities designed to connect you with ancient traditions and the natural world. Imagine yourself as a hunter-gatherer, with the opportunity to wield replicas of traditional hunting tools, such as spears and Hopi rabbit sticks, aiming at wooden targets as warriors once did. Or, delve into the art of Pemican making, a vital skill that produced a nourishing travel food crucial to indigenous peoples' survival. Each experience is not just an activity but a doorway into the past, guided by the knowledgeable Pamela Good Wind, who leads each program with a passion for education and cultural preservation. Hiking enthusiasts will rejoice in the chance to explore the Turtle Head Rock Trail. This journey invites hikers to practice the cultural observation skills so integral to Native American ways of living, culminating in awe-inspiring views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains from Turtle Head Rock. Along the way, pause at the "Lightening Tree" for a moment of reflection and connection with the environment. For those with a creative spirit, the Winter Count program offers a hands-on experience in recording history through pictographs on hide, using natural, earth-based paints. This workshop not only imparts a unique skill but also provides insight into the ways indigenous peoples preserved their stories and histories. This destination is perfect for RV camping enthusiasts looking for an escape from the modern world, offering a primitive setting on historic land where the air is fresh, and the landscape is breathtaking. Programs are suitable for both adults and children ages 9 and up, making this an ideal educational retreat for families. As you plan your visit, remember that all activities are conducted outdoors, with appropriate accommodations for all weather conditions. Reservations are required at least 2 days in advance, with a variety of programs available to suit diverse interests and abilities. This is more than just a camping trip; it's a journey into the heart of Native American tradition and an opportunity to learn, listen, and connect with history in a deeply personal way. Prepare to embark on an RV camping adventure that transcends the ordinary, where every activity, from the challenge of the spear throw to the quiet focus of crafting with earth paints, invites you into a world where the past and present merge under the wide, Colorado sky.
