About
This location is a beautifully preserved historic site featuring a reproduction fort built in 1864, along with an 1873 farmhouse, 1902 church, 1900 summer kitchen, stockade, blacksmith shop, lookout tower, sod house, gristmill, 1890s drugstore, museum, and newly added 1869 homestead cabin. The grounds transport visitors back in time with authentically furnished buildings and thousands of carefully curated historical artifacts, many of which remain fully operational—from vintage automobiles and player pianos to music boxes and early household appliances. Guests consistently praise the depth and quality of the collections, noting that exhibits rival those found in major museums.
The property offers a peaceful overnight experience conveniently located just off Interstate 90, yet remarkably quiet despite its proximity to the highway. RV parking spots are level, spacious, and well-marked, with ample room for maneuvering large rigs. Electric hookups are available (30 and 50 amp), and the grounds provide plenty of open space for walking dogs and exploring at leisure. Visitors enjoy beautiful sunsets and sunrises from their parking areas, and nearby amenities include gas stations, dining options, and a convenience store within minutes.
The knowledgeable and passionate staff welcome guests with exceptional hospitality, often staying after regular hours to accommodate late arrivals and provide personalized tours of the museum and historic buildings. Guests consistently describe the experience as educational, moving, and memorable—a unique blend of comfortable overnight accommodations and engaging history brought to life through detailed storytelling. The property is maintained beautifully, with volunteers dedicated to preserving and sharing the area's rich heritage with warmth and enthusiasm.
