Here, you can learn all about this estate’s history, its operations today, its origins within the Harvest Hosts community, and what future visitors can expect to experience.
Located on an old stage coach route just outside of Jacksonville, Oregon, travelers will find Hummingbird Estates. This winery has a surprising history. After Ed and Susan Walk farmed Hummingbird Farm in Neoga, Illinois for 40 years, they craved a new adventure. After much pondering, they purchased what would become Hummingbird Estates in 2017. The house itself was built in 1926 and is registered on the National Historic Registry. After two years of renovations and planting seventeen acres of vineyard, they were ready to open their property as an elegant bed and breakfast, vineyard, tasting room, and wedding venue.
The Business Today
Southern Oregon has a surprisingly vibrant wine industry, so Hummingbird Estates is naturally thriving. The added bed and breakfast inside a historic mansion doesn’t hurt either. Today, locals absolutely adore visiting and staying the night in the elegant rooms. Oftentimes, locals even bring their own RVs for a night away on the stunning property.
The winery has always strived to offer something for everyone. Currently, they offer several types of wine ranging from dry to sweet, local beers, and non-alcoholic beverages. In the future, they are hoping to create non-alcoholic sparkling grape beverages to be more inclusive.
The estate is a Nationally Registered Historic Property, just two miles from historic Jacksonville and the Britt Music Festival, twenty miles from the Ashland Shakespeare Festival, and a few hours from Crater Lake. In addition, nearby Forrest Park, there are over sixty miles of hiking and mountain biking trails.
Joining Harvest Hosts
Hummingbird Estates joined Harvest Hosts in August 2020 after a friend suggested it. Since then, dozens of Harvest Hosts members have enjoyed the tranquility of the Hummingbird Estate grounds. Members are not only welcome to tasting the wines, but waking up to a breakfast prepared by their on-site chef. All members have to do is request a time to have it ready on their breakfast terrace. If you are interested in knowing more about the history of the property, feel free to ask almost any employee. We have an insider tip to ask about the hidden wall jewelry box in the master suite.
Please note, until Spring 2021 this location is unable to accept RVs over twenty-nine feet in length because their big rig parking is under construction. Currently, they offer two pet-friendly spaces.
