TL;DR: Cara Russell of Hwy 21 Drive-In loves meeting diverse travelers through Harvest Hosts, boosting sales on rainy nights, and reviving local drive-ins.
We had the pleasure of chatting with Cara Russell, the Manager and Operator of Hwy 21 Drive-In. Cara shared her joy of meeting diverse travelers through Harvest Hosts, the boost in sales on rainy nights, and memorable encounters with RVers from all over. Her enthusiasm for reviving local drive-ins and creating a safe, nostalgic space for watching movies under the stars is truly inspiring.
What is your favorite part about hosting?
“Our favorite part of being a Host is meeting all the different members from all different regions, including the UK. Each member has a unique story about themselves and their travels.”
How has hosting RVers helped your bottom line?
“I have seen an increase in sales especially on a rainy evening where we might not see that much foot traffic due to weather. Harvest Host makes up for the money not coming in on those rainy nights.”
Do you have any fun memories or stories to share?
“I had a wonderful couple from New Brunswick, Canada. They were so much fun to talk with and get to know, they even invited me up for a stay at their place!
One evening we has 5 campers on Screen 3, it was awesome to see them out there having fun, talking w/ each other, playing cards & trying to get me to join in on the fun. Unfortunately I had to work, movies must go on!”
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your experience?
“I was over the moon seeing how camping at our Drive In took off, I didn't expect it would be so successful. I honestly just wanted to bring attention back to our local Drive In Movie Theaters. There are only 302 Drive In's in the country & all of the Drive In's are owned by are hard working everyday people just trying to keep the Drive In dream alive for future generations to watch movies under the stars in a fun & safe environment for all ages to experience!”
