Our Five Fave Apps for RVers

If you read travel blogs or follow travel influencers, you’ve noticed everyone has a few favorite travel apps. Storage space on most devices won’t allow you to download every app. Besides, you only need a handful of well-chosen apps for successful road trips.

Most RVers consider RV Trip Wizard a must-have tool for trip planning. Think of it as the glue that holds each trip together. The Visual RV Trip Planner includes several advanced features, including distance rings to help you plan where to stop each day.

The Planner customizes routes based on your RV’s height and weight, avoiding low clearances and other restrictions. You can even include your Harvest Host bookings in the Trip Wizard tool (once the host confirms). A favorite feature of Trip Wizard is the ability to filter what you want to see on the Visual Planner. I love that I can find my favorite fuel stops on the map, and can plan for fuel stops based on my RV’s fuel capacity and mileage.

One precaution! You can select the types of roads you want to avoid, such as interstates, toll roads, etc. The app will obey your commands, but you may end up traveling on rural roads with long distances between fuel and rest stops. One of the most robust trip-planning tools available, Trip Wizard is part of the RV LIFE Pro membership. Membership includes access to the RV Life GPS, an RV-friendly turn-by-turn GPS program.

For unique experiences at vineyards, breweries, farms, museums, and other unique spots, you’ll want to install the Harvest Hosts app. Icons on the map indicate whether you’ll be staying at a farm, a brewery, or an attraction. The filters on the mobile app allow you to view hosts by type, size rig they can accommodate, pets, same-day booking, etc. Filters can save a huge amount of time by leaving out hosts that don’t quite meet your specific needs.

In the app, you can find details about the host, check availability, and submit a request to book your one-night stay. If the host offers products or services, they often list those in the app. As part of the Harvest Host’s etiquette for guests. It’s suggested to make a small purchase during your stay. Boondockers Welcome offers access to a wide range of host locations, including rural properties, farms, suburban areas, and off-the-beaten-path gems. Some stays are in an urban host’s driveway. Others are in wooded areas with pond views.

During your stay, you may have access to electricity, water, and an RV dump station. Some hosts offer these services at no charge, while others request a small fee. You’ll find each host’s preferences and rules in the app. Hosts sometimes mention activities and nearby attractions and even offer to share more information if needed.

What many RVers love about Boondockers Welcome is the friendships often made with hosts. It’s not unusual for hosts to share a campfire or other activity with guests. If you’re not yet a member, you can join here.

If your RV travels lean toward unconventional or off-grid experiences, iOverlander is a free, community-driven database of campsites, fuel stops, and more. It thrives on the collective wisdom of travelers who share real-time insights. Users contribute GPS-tagged locations with concise details and photos.

One limitation of iOverlander is availability—while you can access the app while offline, you can’t view the map. Android devices may cache part of the map, so you can see locations previously viewed.

Find a curated selection of top-notch campgrounds when you use the free Campendium app. Like many other travel apps, Campendium includes a star rating system and posts user reviews. Not only does the app offer access to RV parks, it has sections where you can find free camping, sites in National Parks and Forests, and information about camping in state parks.

While you can’t reserve a site online through the app, Campendium does list websites and contact information for each park featured on the site. Soon users will need to sign up for a free Roadpass account to access Campendium. You can do it here.

North by Northwest

Our tour of the Northwest starts in Seattle where grunge meets greenery and salty sea air mingles with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. We take a quick trip through Salem, Oregon before moving down the coast.

Seattle, WA

Grab a latte the size of your rig at Pike Place Market where you can witness friendly fishmongers tossing salmon like frisbees. Then, cruise through Ballard Locks, where salmon leap the ladder on their journey home. Soak in the Emerald City's funky charm from Gas Works Park. Discover a playful troll living under a bridge, and explore the Fremont neighborhood's artistic vibes and quirky shops.

California Dreaming

There’s nothing like summer on the California Coast. Start your trip in Sacramento and experience California’s history and culture with a free guided tour of the State Capitol. Don’t miss Hearst Castle, which features architecture and artwork loved by newspaper publisher, William Randolph Hearst. Take the Julia Morgan Tour, and enjoy rarely-seen areas of the Castle. South of the Border

Tijuana, located just south of the border, in Baja California, Mexico, offers a vibrant tapestry of cultural and culinary experiences. Visit the iconic Avenida Revolución, with its markets, street art, and shops. For a taste of Tijuana's gastronomic scene, explore the food trucks at Telefonica Gastro Park. Most people don’t know that the Ceasar Salad was first created in Tijuana at the place that gave the famous salad its name - Caesars.

The Tijuana Cultural Center (CECUT) and Plaza Monumental Tijuana, a historic bullfighting arena dating back to 1947 are must-see attractions.

Soak in the thermal springs and enjoy breathtaking mountain views at the historic Grove Park Inn.

In Pisgah National Forest, vastness takes your breath away with hiking trails, waterfalls, and mountain peaks for every fitness level. The Ashville Museum of History features exhibits on Cherokee culture, the Civil War, and Appalachian crafts.

Another favorite on our tour of Spring Break favorites is one of the jewels of the Southwest—Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Visit Petroglyph National Monument to see one of North America's largest collections of petroglyphs. Wander through a historic barrio—Old Town Albuquerque. Cruise a nostalgic stretch of Route 66 and visit the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center.

The Tijeras Arroyo Trail unfurls like a ribbon through scenic foothills. The Rio Grande River whispers its secrets through interactive exhibits and guided walks.

Located less than ½ mile from the Rio Grande River, Cummins Alpacas invites guests to enjoy their 3-acre farm and alpacas in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque.
They offer alpaca fiber products and alpaca trekking along the river.

Book a quiet overnight stay at Modesto Gardens for a quiet overnight. They’re 10 miles from downtown, with easy interstate access. You’ll love the views of the Sandia Mountains.

iOverlander

For an overnight stay outside the city, Flying J Truck Stop offers RV-specific sites. You can get a shower, eat a meal, and pick up basic necessities in their store.

Campendium

If you want a spacious, level site with a covered picnic area and fire pit, Coronado RV Park will meet the bar. Campers say the Wifi is excellent. Park is located near the Bosque Brewery and close to other Albuquerque attractions.

Enjoy the quiet at Paul’s Border with a scenic pond view and evening campfires. Ideal for road biking or running. Conveniently situated 60 km from downtown Montréali

Overlander

Lachine Canal is a wild camping spot, but it’s big rig-friendly. It’s a long strip of parking spaces next to the canal with plenty of availability.

Campendium

Montreal South KOA Journey is what you’d expect from a KOA park. Pull-through sites with full hookups, clean restrooms, and a swimming pool. The park is close to the metro, so it’s not hard to get into the city for entertainment.
